For over 160 years Motul has been making high-quality motor oils in France. The company have been at the forefront of motorsports for well over a century. Motul was established in 1853 and has been revolutionizing the oil market ever since with groundbreaking innovations. The first semi-synthetic oil was introduced in 1966 and marked a sea change in the production of motor oils. The iconic 300V oil was produced in 1971 and was the very first fully synthetic oil. Today Motul are still pushing the envelope with is the development of motor oils for Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid vehicles requiring SAE 0W-8 100% Synthetic oils.

Since the 1950s Motul oils are synonymous with motorsports across the world and are currently being used in MotoGP, FIM Superbike, FIM EWC, MXGP, Isle of Man TT and the Dakar Rally. Partnerships have been forged with OEM manufactures over the decades of racing and is trusted and used by many of the top motorcycle producers and teams. MotoGP is the oldest of all the motorsports championships, the first MotoGP was held 1949 (AKA 500cc premier class rebranded in 2002 as MotoGP ), the premier 500cc class was won by British rider Leslie Graham on an AJS bike. In the '50s the world championship was dominated by Italian manufacturers such as Mondial, Moto Guzzi, Gilera and MV Agusta, the top team in this era was MV Agusta who had an unbroken 17-year winning streak in the 500cc class from 1958 until 1974.

The '60s witnessed the emergence of Japanese manufacturers such as Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha. The late '60s and mid-'70s were dominated by legendary Italian rider Giacomo Agostini who won 15 world championships riding for MV Agusta and Yamaha.

In the '80s and '90s, the championship saw a plethora of American and Australian riders on Japanese bikes take a stranglehold. Freddie Spencer's first championship was in 1983 the second and final title came in 1985 where he also took the 250cc championship. Eddie Lawson nicknamed "Steady Eddie" won all 4 of his titles riding for the Marlboro Agostini Yamaha team on the YZR500, Wayne Wesley Rainey won the 500cc championship 3 times also with the Yamaha YZR500. The first Australian to win the 500 cc Motorcycle World Championship was Wayne Michael Gardner in 1987, this was followed by Michael "Mick" Sydney Doohan who won 5 consecutive championships for Honda between 1994 and 1998.

The noughties saw Valentino Rossi win 7 MotoGP's riding Honda's NSR500 for the Repsol Honda Team and Yamaha's YZR-M1 for the Gauloises Fortuna Yamaha and the Fiat Yamaha Team.

The MotoGP crown has been won Spanish riders Jorge Lorenzo and Marc Márquez for the past 7 years. Jorge Lorenzo wins were in 2010, 2012, and 2015 whilst riding the Yamaha YZR-M1, Marc Márquez has 5 wins in total and has only missed out on the 2015 championship since joining MotoGP.
